Making a Difference in Schools with Mental Health First Aid

One in five children aged 13-18 will experience a severe

mental health disorder at some point during their life.

Based on those statistics, in your school classroom of 25 students, five of them may be struggling with the same issues many adults deal with: depression, anxiety, substance abuse.

And yet most children — nearly 80 percent — who need mental health services won't get help.

The National Safety Council- Nebraska Chapter knows how important mental health support is for student's wellbeing and education. That's why we are offering a FREE Mental Health First Aid Course specifically for education professionals to have the training and resources to positively impact a student's life.

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention training. It is focused on teaching individuals to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or substance use disorder and then provides an actionable plan and the tools to start a dialogue to save a life.  This understanding and ability is critical because early intervention has been proven to have positive developmental outcomes later in life.

Mental Health First Aid also provides an opportunity for teachers to connect with one another in a different way—it helps them feel more comfortable opening up and having difficult conversations with each other.

How Mental Health First Aid Can Help in Schools

  • Teaches risk factors and warning signs for a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents.
  • Prepares educators to recognize and respond to mental health and substance use challenges in their students.
  • Provides educators an action plan to support students experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.

Course Description:

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention training.  It improves one’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with care for their mental health or substance use problems.  As part of your workplace health program, it has proven to be a successful and integral part, especially when combined with mental and physical health interventions.

Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves.

Mental Health First Aid was developed by the National Council for Behavioral Health and is delivered by the National Safety Council - Nebraska chapter.
Three quantitative and one qualitative studies have shown that the program:
    1) improves people’s mental health
    2) increases understanding of mental health issues and treatments
    3) connects more people with care
    4) reduces stigma

With Mental Health First Aid, teachers have the training and resources to positively impact a student’s entire life.
