Terry Hughes

His safety education has come from real life on the job experiences. The knowledge gained over those years has made Terry a true safety professional. “Terry’s Treasure Chest” has been presented to countless oil related industries and businesses around the Central Valley of California. Thousands of oil related employees have heard his safety message which speaks about the consequences of making bad safety choices and the need to go home alive and well every day to their treasures.

Ted Schick

Residing in Fredenberg Township, MN, Ted Schick is a corporate trainer, professional speaker and consultant with his own business, Schick Corporate Learning. A retired naval officer who rose up from the enlisted ranks, Ted has over 30 years’ experience leading people. With over 20 years in teaching, Ted holds a BA Business from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, received a teaching certificate from Bemidji State University, and a Master of Education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Ted is active in his community with Spirit Mountain Ski Patrol, local animal humane societies including Animal Allies and Friends of Animals and has served as a mentor for Mentor Duluth. In his “spare” time, he has been a stand-up comedian, teaches Boot Camp fitness classes, serves as a personal fitness coach and is a seasoned triathlete.          

Susan Harris-Broomfield, University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension

"Sleepless in Nebraska"

Susan is the Rural Health, Wellness, and Safety Educator for Nebraska Extension. Her Susan-Harris-Broomfield_web.jpgeducation includes a bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences in Business, as well as a master’s degree in Health and Human Performance – Gerontology. She has a 10-year history of education, liaison, and administrative work in health, wellness, and safety. She is a graduate of the Nebraska Hospital Association Leadership Institute and is a certified Corporate Wellness Program Coordinator and Coach.

Susan also serves as Educator and staff member for AgrAbility, a partnership organization between UNL and Easterseals Nebraska, which serves injured or disabled workers in agriculture by providing site assessments, ideas for modifying equipment, and education with resources to help them get back to work.

The passion Susan brings to teaching about our crucial need for quality sleep is derived from extensive research on the topic throughout her masters studies and from interviews with pulmonologists, physicians, sleep center managers, sleep study patients, and research experts.

Cesar Martinez, Landscapes Unlimited

"Safety & the English Language Learner-Undestanding & Overcoming Training Challenges with Spanish Speaking Employees"

From working at the one of the Midwest's largest health systems, Bryan Health, to working Cesar-Martinez_web.jpgfor the country's largest golf course and recreation development firm, Landscapes Unlimited, Cesar has successfully managed Safety and Talent Management programs in a bilingual environment, English and Spanish, for nearly 25 years. He has been involved with a variety of community and civic organizations in his home town, Lincoln, Nebraska. Cesar's past community involvement includes appointment to the Nebraska Mexican American Commission by then governor Ben Nelson, board member of the Hispanic Community Center of Lincoln, Leadership Lincoln Fellow - Class X, and selection as one of Lincoln's Top 40 under 40 young professionals. 

Ron Gantt, SCM Safety

Ron Gantt is Vice President and Principal Consultant for SCM Safety, a safety managementRon-Gantt_web.jpg consulting and training firm located in San Ramon, CA. He has 16 years experience in safety management in industries such as construction, utilities, and petrochemical, as well as others. Ron has a master degree in advanced safety engineering and management, as well as undergraduate degrees in psychology and occupational safety and health. He is currently a PhD student at University of Alabama at Birmingham in Interdisciplinary Engineering. He is a Certified Safety Professional, a Certified Environmental, Safety and Health Trainer, and an Associate in Risk Management. Ron is also co-editor and contributor at

Phillip E. Essay, M.D., Partner—Nebraska Spine + Pain Center, Consultant—Opioid Intelligence

He has worked closely with members of multiple medical specialties to treat a broad spectrum of pain conditions. He is also a consultant who has refined and expanded industry and professional intelligence on the initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of controlled substances, particularly opioids. With more than two decades of medical practice, expert testimony, and more than eighty professional and public presentations, Dr. Essay provides a highly credible yet unique perspective on the impact of opioid use and abuse on the medical community, businesses, social organizations, and individuals. Dr. Essay has provided consultation for multiple medical groups and organizations to educate staff and providers on rational controlled substance management helping multiple practices develop policies and procedures to safely initiate opioid therapy, minimize aberrant opioid behavior, and implement opioid exit strategies. He has presented expert testimony to the Nebraska State Legislature, district and federal courts, and United States Congressmen on multiple bills pertaining to opioid regulation and is a standards advisor for third party payers regarding interventional treatment of the spine.

Joe Heilhecker, Spartan Motors
Joe is a retired Air Force officer with 20+ years of Air Force leadership, management, operations and logistics experience enhanced with 20+ years of process improvement at the operational and strategic levels of organizations.  As a lean/process improvement advisor, he led and coached various organizations in government, manufacturing, medical, mining, supply chain and education. Joe developed the Air Force-wide continuous process improvement training program saving more than $600 Million.  He also co-authored the Air Force’s 340-page playbook for process improvement. Joe currently works for Spartan Motors and is responsible for Continuous Process Improvements.

Mike Langford, Lueder Construction

Construction Executive with over 20 years in the Residential and Commercial Construction Industry. Mike joined Lueder Construction in 2006 and overseas all Field Operations, Safety, Training and the Lueder Service Center. He also has experience in Project Management and Business Development. Mike is Alabama native moving to Omaha in 1997 where his career began serving in the US Army performing multiple disciplines across the United States and abroad.He is a dedicated community service volunteer and served or currently serving with different organizations. Currently Mike is a member of LifeSpring Church and Suburban Rotary. 

Mike and his wife Rachel have four Children and two grandchildren. He is a devoted father and who enjoys fishing, coaching youth athletics and time with family. 

Jeff Meuret, Heafy Hoffmann Dworak Cutler Mortuaries
Jeff Meuret has 26 years with Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler Mortuaries and is currently the Marketing Director for all locations.   He is manages the advance planning staff, IT and phone services, and all media, social media and web development.  On January 26, 2016, the central office location at 78th and West Center Road suffered a devastating fire and the building was a complete loss.  He will be sharing experiences and what we’ve learned regarding disaster awareness and planning. 

Dan Velasquez, SIRE Ethanol
Dan Velasquez has been the Safety Manager at Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy Plant in Council Bluffs for 7 years. He is also currently serving as the Safety Taskforce Chairman for the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association.

Dan is an OSHA Outreach instructor, is a Specialist in Safety & Health and holds an Advanced Safety Certificate from the National Safety Council.

Dan will be sharing his knowledge of Emergency Preparedness and his direct involvement with a fatality less than a year ago.

Chris Bryant, National Safety Council, Nebraska

"Creating an Emergency Action Plan"

Chris Bryant is currently the Director of Workplace Safety Services for National Safety Chris-Bryant_web.jpgCouncil, Nebraska (NSCN). He is responsible for the technical execution of safety and security instruction, development of safety programs, as well as outreach custom safety solutions for NSCN's member companies.

Prior to his employment at NSCN, Mr. Bryant was appointed Chief of Military Munitions Remediation Section, United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) – Omaha District in January 2013. As Chief, he served as Supervisory Occupational Health and Safety Manager for the Military Munitions Design Center – Omaha. He was responsible for the technical execution of the Military Munitions Response Program with a staff of fourteen (14) subject matter experts. Additionally, he is a USACE certified Diving Safety Administrator and authorized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Trainer.truction, development of safety programs, as well as outreach custom safety solutions for NSCN's member companies.

Previously, he was assigned as Lead Ordnance and Explosives Safety Specialist for Omaha District managing seven (7) field specialists overseeing contractors. During this assignment, he also served as lead munitions technical expert and voting member on the $1.295 billion Worldwide Environmental Remediation Services (WERS) source selection board for Small Business. Prior to management, he served as an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist providing oversight services on Omaha District contracted Environmental and Construction sites.

Mr. Bryant has over 20 years of federal service with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Air Marshal Service, and as an active duty Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician with the US Navy.

"What Triggers an OSHA Inspection & How to Reduce Them in Your Workplace" Brian Elmore

With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.

Brian Elmore has been with OSHA for 11 years and has been in the safety profession for over 20 years. He is a Safety & Heath Compliance Officer out of the OSHA Omaha Area Office. He has been involved in many types of inspections including fatality investigations and other incident investigations including, but not limited to; amputations, falls, explosions and electrical-related incidents. Previously Mr. Elmore was a Plant Safety Manager for Frito-Lay, Inc. and a Regional Safety Manager for Pepsi-Cola, and also a Safety Consultant with OSHA’s Cooperative Program in Missouri. Mr. Elmore attended the University of Central Missouri and obtained a Master of Science degree in Industrial Safety Management.
