Even though we had snow in Nebraska lately, it is Spring. Spring is the time that our high school students make their plans for celebrating Prom and Graduations, and we want you to celebrate, but be safe.
Recent studies have shown that 54% of students will drink alcoholic beverages on Prom night, teens are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash at night, that only about 55% of teens wear their seatbelts, driving too fast and sadly about 24% of teenage deaths had a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher.
In Nebraska last year 83 people out of 246 total automobile crashes, were a result of Alcohol impairment. The numbers also reflect that over 75% of teenage drivers and passengers that were killed in crashes, were not using their seat belts. Just in the last couple of days in the Omaha metro area three deaths and numerous critical injuries have occurred due to Impaired driving.
Prom season is in full swing and graduation will be here before we know it, but please when out and about, please drive carefully, wear your seatbelts, leave texting and cell phone use until parked, and Never drink and drive.
Do not become a statistic in Nebraska, be remembered for your accomplishments of graduating and staying safe.
