May 20, 2016

If you are concerned that you have a problem with alcohol or are worried about a family member, friend, and/or co-worker who might have an alcohol problem, the following information may be helpful.

Difference Between Symptoms of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependence:

There is a difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Alcohol abusers have some ability to set limits on their drinking.  People who are alcohol dependent cannot set limits on their drinking once they start.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Abuse include:

Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that results in harm to health, interpersonal relationships, or ability to work including:

  • Repeatedly Neglecting Home, Family, and Work Responsibilities
  • Alcohol Use in Dangerous Situations
  • Legal Problems Due to Drinking
  • Continued Drinking Despite Relationship Problems
  • Drinking to Decrease Stress

Signs and symptoms of alcoholism:

Alcoholism involves all the symptoms of alcohol abuse, but also involves other elements such as   physical dependence, tolerance and withdrawal.

If you are still concerned that you have a problem with alcohol or are worried about a family member, friend, and/or co-worker who might have an alcohol problem, today can be the day that you help yourself or a loved one get sober. Seeking professional help is a sign of strength.
